AUGUSTA - Donald C. Fortin, 76, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center at Graybirch after his 34-year courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born in Augusta on Sept. 9, 1937, the son of the late Honore and Marie A. (Poulin) Fortin.

Don attended St. Charles Seminary from the age of 14, through high school and college. After college, he joined the Marine Corps for six months of active duty and four years in the reserves. He then attended Gates Business College to pursue a career in accounting and was employed by the accounting department of Bates Manufacturing.

In 1966, he became the manager/treasurer of St. Augustine Credit Union, later named Kennebec Valley Federal Credit Union, where he also served as its president until 1990, when he retired because of his disability.

In 1989, he received the James Grasso Award from the Credit Union League for outstanding Credit Union Manager of the Year.

Don also served on the MaineGeneral Medical Center Board of Directors prior to his retirement.

Don loved all sports, but especially racquetball, where he won many local tournaments. During his high school and college years at St. Charles, he was the schools star basketball player and nicknamed "Max" by his Canadian colleagues.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jeanne (Guerrette) Fortin, of Augusta; two daughters, Diane Bilodeau and her husband, Bryan, of North Yarmouth, and Sharon Stevens and her husband, Tom, of Randolph; three grandchildren, Alexa Bilodeau, and Benjamin and Luke Stevens; his brother, Vincent Fortin and his wife, June, of Sidney; his sister, Jackie Wright, of Vassalboro; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family wished to express its sincere appreciation to the staff at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Graybirch and HealthReach Hospice for the care and compassion they showed to Don and the family during this difficult time.

At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Avenue, Augusta.

Those who desire may make donations in Don's memory to MaineGeneral Hospice, P.O. Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903.
