WEST GARDINER - Donald E. MacDonald, 90, of West Gardiner, passed away at home with his loving family at his side on Saturday, July 12, 2014.

Donald was born Sept. 18, 1923, in Gardiner, son of Donald and Susie (True) MacDonald. He grew up on Autumn Street and graduated from Gardiner High School in 1941. He served in the Army Air Corps from December 1942 to November 1945 in the Pacific Theater. After returning home, he attended Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, Babson College in Massachusetts and the American Institute of Baking in Chicago before taking over ownership of MacDonald's Bakery from his father in 1953. That same year, he married Betty Bowser, R.N., of Amherst, Nova Scotia, and together they had three daughters.

With the help of his dedicated and loyal family and employees, he successfully ran his bakery business for 30 years. Upon retiring in 1983, Don and his wife enjoyed the next 20 winters in Jupiter, Fla.

Donald was a member of Highland Avenue United Methodist Church, a member of both Masonic Bodies, a member of Kora Shrine, Kora Flags and the American Legion.

Donald was predeceased by his brother, Tom, in 1978; his father in 1962; and his mother in 1983. In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters: Janet (James) Whalen, of West Gardiner, Dawn (Larry) Chadwick, of East Pittston, and Karen (George) Burgess, of Miami, Fla. The pride of his life was his six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. They are: Nathan (Sarah) Whalen with two sons, Eben and Luke; Christopher Whalen and his three daughters, Anna, Lilly and Julia; Jason (Christina) Chadwick with two sons Wyatt and Owen; Kimberly (Caleb) Dubois and son Oliver; Ryan Burgess; and Mike Burgess. He is also survived by his sister, Pauline Huff, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Don had a zest for life and will be remembered for his positive attitude, keen sense of humor and infectious laugh.

From 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, friends may call at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, at the Highland Avenue United Methodist Church.
