WINTHROP - Dorothy Gertrude Cameron, 97, of Winthrop, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014 at Winthrop Manor.

She was born in Everett, Mass., July 30, 1916 the daughter of Thomas Edward and Florence (Hussen) Hannon. She attended school in Everett and graduated from high school in 1934. She married Herbert Cameron in 1936. Prior to her marriage, Dorothy worked in retail in the Boston area.

During World War II, Dorothy was the office manager at Curtis Wright Aviation in Buffalo, N.Y.. After the war, she and her family lived in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Florida, Puerto Rico and Maine. In 1955 the family moved to Winthrop. During this stay, in Winthrop, she and her husband operated two nursing homes, one in Winthrop and the other in Waterville. After retirement she and her husband lived in Rangeley for several years.

After the death of her husband, Dot moved back to Winthrop where she worked at Mallow's, a women's clothing store. She also worked a few days a month for Community Service Telephone Co.

Dot enjoyed stamping, painting, crewel work, needlepoint and knitting lap robes for veterans. She loved classical music, which she like to play loudly. She was an avid reader and belonged to the book club in Wayne. She was also active in the Friends of the Bailey Library. She worked at the annual book sale until she was 91.

Mrs. Cameron was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Edward and his wife, Virginia Hannon; her husband, Herbert; her son, Tony and a great-granddaughter.

She is survived by her son, Michael Cameron and his wife, Kathy; her grandchildren, Kellie, Mark and Tom Cameron, Terry Girouard, Tracy Polisky, Jamie Mockler and Chris Cameron; nieces, Susan Lyndes, Sheila McUllough, Gail Hannon and Nephew Mark Hannon along with several great-grandchildren. Dot also had a special place in her heart for Natalie Leighton Weise who she considered a daughter.

Dot's family wishes to thank all her friends who were so kind to her in the last several years with a special thanks to the staff at Winthrop Manor for the kindness she received during her stay. They would also like to thank the hospice volunteers and nurses for their compassion.

A memorial celebration of life will be held at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014. Relatives and friends may visit from 11 a.m. until service time.
