Thomas McClurg "Tom" Acheson, 73, who was born in Lewiston, Maine, and grew up in Augusta, passed away in Birmingham, Ala., on Jan. 14, 2014.
Mr. Acheson graduated from the University of Maine with a bachelor of science degree in business administration and Harvard University with a masters in business administration. He held Reserve commissioned officer grade of second lieutenant in the Army of the United States. He was an automobile dealer principal in the Birmingham market for more than 45 years and the majority owner and chairman of the Board of Tameron Honda (Birmingham and Daphne, Ala.), Acura of Memphis (Memphis, Tenn.) and Tameron Hyundai (Birmingham). He enjoyed developing operating partners and retail automotive real estate. His dealerships consistently achieved awards from their manufacturer, including many Honda President's Awards and Acura Precision Team Awards, a source of much pride for him. During his career he served on the Dealer Council of both American Honda Motor Co. and the Lincoln-Mercury Division of Ford Motor Co. and was an active member in the NCM Associates 20 Groups where he made many lifelong friends. His other interests included boating, snow skiing, tennis, golf and his faithful dog, Ruggles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James McClurg Acheson and Mary Petrov Acheson; brother Richard David Acheson; and daughter Dawn Marie Acheson. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Sheree Netherton Acheson; brothers James Michael Acheson (Anne), Robert Bruce Acheson and William John Acheson (Peggy); children David James Acheson and Cameron Elizabeth Acheson; grandchild Paige Ashley Acheson; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, immediately followed by a funeral Mass celebrated by the Rev. Robert Sullivan and inurnment in the columbarium.
