LITCHFIELD - Vernal E. Glidden Jr., 84, of Hallowell Road, died Nov. 20, 2013 at MaineGeneral Medical Center's Alfond Center for Health in Augusta after a brief illness.
He was born in Jefferson on June 8, 1929, the son of Vernal E. Glidden Sr. and Violet A. (Cunningham) Glidden.
Mr. Glidden served honorably in the Air Force during the Korean conflict.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Associated Grocers of Gardiner for 21 years. He was previously employed as a baker by McDonald's Bakery in Gardiner, and in the same capacity by Dunkin' Donuts in Augusta. He also worked for New England Furniture Co. for a time.
Mr. Glidden was a member of the Monmouth American Legion Post.
Vernal enjoyed playing guitar and singing, especially with his best friend, Leroy Capen. He loved going to church and tinkering in his garage. He loved teddy bears, old tractors, antique cars and Cadillacs. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. He was predeceased by his father, Vernal E. Glidden Sr.; by his mother, Violet (Cunningham) Hatch; and by a sister, Joyce Jordan.
Surviving is his wife, Dora (Deel) Glidden, of Litchfield; one son, Darrell L. Glidden, of Litchfield; two daughters, Sherry Boochko, of Pittston, and Roxanne Tuttle and her husband, Henry, of Litchfield; and four grandchildren, Shannon Hanson, Daniel Boochko, Cierra and Haley Tuttle.
Friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24 at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25.
Committal with military honors will follow at noon in the chapel at Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
