WINTHROP - David Carl Ketchen, 78, of Winthrop, surrounded by his loving family, passed away Dec. 13, 2013, at the USVA Togus Hospice Unit, Togus, after a long illness.
David was born in Old Town on Oct. 1, 1935, to Carl D. and Irene G. (McIninch) Ketchen.
He graduated from Old Town High School, class of 1953. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, David served from 1954 to 1959, including duty aboard the aircraft carrier USS Wasp.
On Feb. 15, 1958, he married his beloved wife of 55 years, Denise (Hachey), in Gardiner. He worked as a manager for W.T. Grant Co. from 1961 to 1971 throughout New England before he and Denise settled in Winthrop in 1970. Together they purchased the Western Auto franchise store in Winthrop and in 1977 transitioned into Dave's Appliance Inc. which serves the surrounding communities to this day. His commitment to the business, continuous smile, sense of humor and compassion for people built him an incredibly loyal customer base now maintained by his family. He and Denise retired in 1999 and enjoyed many years traveling the country in their motor home. His keen wit and devotion to family will be sadly missed.
Dave served on the Winthrop Fire Department for 20 years, retiring as assistant chief in 1993. He was actively involved as a Eucharistic minister and sacristan at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. His devotion to God was a major factor in every aspect of his life. He was a member of the St. Francis Men's Club and the Knights of Columbus.
David was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Alfred Ketchen, and sister-in-law, Joan, of Trenton.
David is survived by Denise, his loving wife of 55 years; three sons, Scott and wife Agnes, Michael and wife Miranda, and Brian and wife Kellie, all of Winthrop; grandchildren Julie, David, Mitchell and Michaela; his faithful dog, Jazzy; and several nieces and nephews. David is also survived by his brother, Donald Ketchen and wife Lise, of Old Town, with whom he shared many joyous times at their brother Alfred's seaside home in Trenton.
