Phyllis R. Erwin(1929-2013)

HERMON - Phyllis R. Erwin, 84, lived a long, fruitful and impactful life. She was born on Oct. 17, 1929, in Gardiner, the daughter of Harold and Thelma (Pettigrove) Rogers. She completed her life's journey peacefully in her home, surrounded by her loved ones on Nov. 8, 2013.
She worked very hard as a Maine House representative where she served alongside her husband Sen. Edgar Erwin. She was a lifelong self-employed accountant and was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. She graduated from Kennebec School of Commerce in Gardiner in 1947 and went on to college to begin her accounting career.
Phyllis was a law clerk in the Attorney General's office, she spent eight years as the secretary to the Speaker of House, secretary of Rumford Democratic Town Committee, she was on the Oxford County Democratic Committee and was a lifelong member of the American Legion and it's Auxiliary. She fought very hard for senior citizens, veterans and today's youth as she felt "they were the future leaders of this great country."
Phyllis has always been the most honest, hardworking person. Her integrity and principles have always guided her kind, warm heart. She has always held a positive attitude in life. She would greet anyone, friends, family or strangers - with a warm smile, a rich laugh and kind words. She was very loving and kind hearted. She was dedicated to helping others and was always very thankful for the blessings life brought her. She will forever be in our hearts.
Phyllis is survived by her three loving children, Susan Hayes, of Hermon, Michael Matthews, of Lisbon Falls, and Linda Cloutier, of North Whitefield; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Brown, Jessica Hayes, Ariminta Matthews, Shawn Cloutier, Michelle Hunt, Erik Richman, Stefan Richman, Isaac Congdon and Joshua Congdon; seven great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Brown, Emma Hunt, Noah Hunt, Madison Richman, Kyle Richman, Megan Richman and Dylan Richman; one beloved sister, Margaret Goodale; five nieces, Nancy Goodale, Debbie Starbird, Pam Rogers, Paula Turtlelott and Clarice Tibbs; and four nephews, Johnny Goodale, David Curtis, Darryl Curtis and Jerry Rogers.
Visiting will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1 Church St., Augusta. A celebration of Phyllis's life will be at 1 p.m. on Friday at South Parish Congregational Church, 9 Church St., Augusta. Burial with military honors will be in the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
