READFIELD -- Paul Brian Gaynor, 74, resident of Readfield, passed away with his family by his side on Aug. 12, 2013, after a long illness.

Paul was born on Feb. 20, 1939, in Hoboken, N.J., to Thomas and Margaret (Korman) Gaynor. He attended St. Peter's Prep High School and the Naval Academy. He later joined the Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam War as a captain. Paul went on to Fordham Law School and continued his work in service as a lawyer, law professor and special-education advocate. Recently, Paul worked as a substitute teacher at Maranacook Middle School, where he inspired and touched many lives.

Paul moved to Readfield, where he had come during summers as a boy, to live a quiet and peaceful monastic life. His main motivation in life was to cultivate compassion and loving kindness, which he accomplished through his Buddhist studies and practice. Paul was given the Buddhist name "Dhammadasa," which translates to "servant of God" in Pali.

Paul is survived by his son, Brian; and daughters Katya and Lesya. He was the proud grandfather to Margaret and Thomas. Paul is also survived by his sister, Margaret.

The family has established a donation in Paul's name to the Insight Meditation Society, his Buddhist community in Barre, Mass. Please visit www.face book.com/InMemoryOfPaulGaynor.
