Patrick Carleton Harris passed away in Augusta on Sept. 11, 2013. Patrick was predeceased by his mother, Alison (Beal) Fletcher, of Bar Harbor; father Carroll Eugene Harris, of Washburn; and siblings Melanie Moryc, of Mariaville, and Wilson "Billy" Fletcher, of Bar Harbor. Patrick is survived by his daughters, Taelor Harris, of Austin, Texas, and Alexandra "Ali" Harris, of San Antonio, Texas; his former wife, Elizabeth Cooper, of Augusta; his grandchildren, Destiny, Mathew, Kenny and Jayden; his stepfather, Wilson Fletcher, of Bar Harbor; his siblings, Carroll Harris (his oldest friend), of Bar Harbor, Shawn Harris, of Washburn, Steven Harris, of Conway, Joe Fletcher, of Monmouth, Robin Fletcher, of Bar Harbor, Julie Harris, of Washburn, Polly Francis Howerton, of Georgetown, Texas, and Jullian Harris, of Asheville, N.C.

Patrick was born in Kingsville, Texas, May 10, 1957. He was raised on Mount Desert Island and graduated from Mount Desert Island High School in 1976. Patrick served his country in the Air Force from 1976 to 1980. Patrick attended the universities of Maine and Texas A&M, where he earned his LSW. Patrick passionately worked as a LSW, focusing on underprivileged children. Patrick loved life, and with a "Lion's Heart" met all challenges head on. On Nov. 30, 2001, Patrick was stricken with quadriplegia following an automobile accident. Patrick refused to allow his condition to slow him down. As a quadriplegic, Patrick penned a book called "Quadriplegics Can Do," skydived, downhill skied, scuba dived and drove his sip & puff wheelchair from Kittery to Fort Kent to earn money for stem cell research. "Glory to the Father and Son, my Lord and Master."

On Sept. 14 at 11 a.m., a celebration of life will be held at North Monmouth Community Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ATEP educational scholarship fund created to assist with his grandchildren's education. Send donations to Kennebec Savings Bank in care of ATEP educational scholarship fund.

I became friends with Patrick and his family in the mid-80s when we were both karate & weight-lifting enthusiasts. With his physical strength, competitiveness, passion, and intensity; I would have bet on him any day of the week to overcome any physical challenge put in his way. He could be a force of nature. Sometimes, that force could bring with it some challenges. But, only someone with his forcefulness could have accomplished all that he did once stricken with quadriplegia. Thank you for the inspiration Patrick, and blessings to your family. Be at peace now my friend.
